The term “aromatherapie” was coined by the French cosmetic chemist Rene Gattefoose. In aromatherapy circles we refer to him as the Grandfather of Aromatherapy. He is best known for his book, Gattefosse’s Aromatherapy, which documents clinical trials establishing essential oils as vital for both physiological and medicinal applications.
When Michelyn Camen approached me for a contribution to her latest article in Sniffapalooza Magazine I thought of Gattefosse. The article titled “Comforting Scents for Uncomfortable Times.” delves into some of the psychological aspects of scent.
All types of aromas have the power to affect us in some way, whether it is the smell of fresh baked cookies, dirty socks or perfume. Botanical perfumes created with pure, whole essential oil and intention can go even deeper due to the aromatherapeutic properties so well documented by Gattefoose back in the early 1900’s.
